How the capacitor is used
In a typical air conditioner, a run capacitor stays connected while the compressor motor and the outdoor fan motor run. Some units use a separate capacitor for each motor, others use one dual capacitor with a common terminal and two outputs. When a capacitor weakens, the motor runs hot or fails to start, which is why AC capacitors are one of the most-replaced service parts.
